On June 13, 2007, the National Office of Intellectual Property - Ministry of Science and Technology issued the Decision No.38534/QD-SHTT on granting the exclusive certificate of utility solution No.1528: "The catalyst used to convert the H2/CO2 mixture into methanol and the method of methanol production using this catalyst" of the Petrovietnam Research and Development Center for Petroleum Processing (PVPro), Vietnam Petroleum Institute.
This utility solution proposes a proper catalyst for the conversion of the H2/CO2 mixture into methanol with a high efficiency, a high durability, and especially a high hydrothermal stability. This catalyst contains the ?-Al2O3 carrier (8-22% by weight of the catalyst); the active phase as a mixture of CuO and ZnO (20-40% by weight of the catalyst); and the modification phase as a mixture of oxide CeO2 (4-16% by weight of the catalyst) and ZrO2 (8-22% by weight of the catalyst).
In terms of economic efficiency of the utility solution, using the ?-Al2O3 carrier which is synthesized from the Tan Binh aluminum hydroxide source allows a simpler, lower-cost, and higher-activity method to synthesize the catalyst in comparison with using the commercial ?-Al2O3 Merck. Therefore, the amount of collected methanol per 1kg of catalyst in 1 hour and the selectivity can be higher by up to 5-6 times and 3-5 times, respectively. In particular, the addition of CeO2 reduces the formation of CO and H2O in the product, and also enhances the methanol selectivity and catalytic stability.
