On September 18, 2017, Vietnam National Space Center (VNSC), Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) signed a cooperative agreement on satellite data exchange with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in Hanoi.


According to the agreement, JAXA will provide Vietnam with ScanSAR ALOS-2 which captures the Vietnamese territory. It is a crucial source of information supporting Vietnam’s DataCube program (a big data platform of Earth observation satellites used to develop applications of monitoring paddies, forest, and water quality as well as fostering satellite data utilization in these fields). The two sides will also cooperate to carry out studies of improving, applying Earth observation satellites’ data (there is not only ALOS-2 but also other satellites as well as available data in Vietnam’s DataCube system). Right after the two sides sign the agreement, actions under the pact will be taken forward immediately and last for two years (September 2017 – September 2019).
